New Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter is not impressed by Theo Epstein. He had this to say, via Extra Bases on Boston.Com:
I’d like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll. You got Carl Crawford ’cause you paid more than anyone else, and that’s what makes you smarter? That’s why I like whipping their butt. It’s great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, ‘How the hell are they beating us?’
Now, there’s likely some truth to this comment, but is Buck Showalter really the one to talk? He managed the Yankee payroll bonanza four seasons without a championship (though the 1994 season ended without a playoff, due to the strike, and that was his best season). In fact, I don’t believe Bucky has actually won a championship. So maybe he should lighten up on the rhetoric and worry about his team.
